Book Review (and giveaway) - The Iron Duke

A few months ago I was contacted by Galaxy Press and asked to review the book The Iron Duke by L. Ron Hubbard

The Iron Duke paperback

The only thing I knew about L. Ron Hubbard is that he was the founder of the Church of Scientology.  But he also wrote pulp fiction adventure stories. He was one of the more popular writers of the pulp fiction era. Writing short stories in almost any subject; westerns, gangsters, spies, deep sea adventures and of course science fiction.

The Iron Duke is set in the 1940's around the time of World War II.

A story about a man named Blacky Lee. He is wanted by just about every government in Europe. He discovered a few years back, that he is a spitting imagine of Prince Phillip from Aldoria. He learns Prince Phillips mannerisms, speech, and royal family tree and proceeds to impersonate the prince. Blacky devises a plan to impersonate the prince in order to escape the governments that want him dead. While trying to convince officials he is the prince of Aldoria, he is discovered a fake due to a small scar that the real prince has, which Blacky does not. Blacky is jailed, but instead of executed, the officials of Aldoria have other plans for him. They set him up as a body double so that the real prince is not murdered during an election. While in jail, the countess of Aldoria sends Blacky fine wine, meals books, and doctors. Blacky uses the countess in another scheme to escape. Unfortunately it doesn't work, and he is almost assassinated at a bridge dedication while posing as the prince. There Blacky declares a free election in the country. He also makes a wager with the countess, if he wins she must marry him.

Can Blacky convince a country that he is fit to be there leader? Will the countess take the wager and end up marrying Blacky the pretend prince?

It was a short read, but entertaining and well written. The audio version was entertaining, with great voices and great sound effects. I enjoyed listening to the production as if it were one of the old radio shows.

If you'd like to read it for yourself, then comment below! I have a paperback version to give away, and an audio version to give away!

Enter to win and I will mail one of these off to you!

Winners will be chosen at random. Giveaway ends in one week on July 3rd!
